How to Remove Stains from Carpets.

Socialising, eating well and looking good are all life’s simple pleasures. But, instead of fun, sometimes these choices result in unwelcome stains on our carpet and furnishings. Don’t stress! With some simple home remedies, those annoying stains will vanish in no time.

Before we get stuck into our stain removal methods, it’s important to always spot test the stain removal solution. Test it on a hidden patch of carpet, this way you can check how your carpet will react.

1. Red wine

At most social gatherings there’s one common scene that usually plays out. You know the one where we all gasp and hold our breath as the glass of red wine topples over and spills all over the carpet.

Follow these simple steps to remove red wine:

  • Immediately blot the area with paper towel or a small cloth, applying even pressure. Make sure you don’t use a rubbing motion, as this will cause the stain will spread.
  • Sprinkle some salt over the stain, this will soak up any wine that didn’t absorb into the paper towel. Let this sit for a minute or so.
  • Tip a little bit of cold water over the affected area and continue to blot. You may need some fresh paper towel or clean cloth that will absorb more liquid.
  • If you need more ammunition to tackle this stain, make a paste of baking soda and water, using a 3 – 1 ratio. Apply generously.
  • Vacuum to remove the paste once it has dried completely.
  • To finish, use a commercial carpet stain remover. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Make up Foundation

If you accidentally knock over or drop your foundation bottle, or make up splatters onto the carpet, don’t worry! We’ve got you covered.

  • Scrape up excess product from the carpet using a butter knife or spoon.
  • Mix cold water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Use this to dampen some paper towel or a piece of cloth.
  • Gently blot the stain with the paper towel or cloth, working from the outside in towards the centre. Remember not to rub the surface because this will spread the stain. Keep blotting until there is no more visible foundation.
  • Dampen a new piece of cloth or paper towel with fresh, plain water. Blot the area again to remove any soapy mixture, then allow to dry.
  • Once completely dry, vacuum the area of the stain.

3. Tomato-based products

Spaghetti Bolognese is a family friendly, signature dish that everyone loves to quickly devour. However, when a rogue dollop of the much-loved, tomato-based sauce ends up staining the carpet, it’s a nightmare! To eliminate this type of stain, follow these simple steps:

  • Quickly blot as much sauce as you possibly can with clean paper towel or cloth. Don’t rub, as this will cause the stain to spread.
  • Soak some new paper towel or cloth with cold water and blot over the stain again. Make sure you’re drawing out the stain instead of pushing it further in.
  • Wet another piece of paper towel or cloth with some lemon juice, or white vinegar, or hydrogen peroxide. Blot the stain again to break it up.
  • Go over the stain with plain water to flush it out.
  • If the stain is still present, use a commercial carpet stain remover, and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
