Our Top Paint Colour Trends & Tips for Winter 2022
It can be difficult to figure out how to bring warmth into your home during the winter months. When it’s dreary and cold outside, colour might be the last thing on your mind. However, designing warm and inviting spaces indoors is key to making the transition to indoor living and entertaining easier during the colder seasons. One of the easiest ways you can achieve this is by integrating winter colour trends into your indoor living and entertaining spaces. You’d be surprised to see just how much the right colour pairings can totally transform an indoor space.
Jim’s Painting recently spoke with our partners at Dulux to learn more about their Restore palette–one of three colour palettes from the 2022 Dulux Colour Forecast. Made up of rich, soothing colours that evoke a feeling of comfort and warmth, these are the perfect picks to help combat the winter blues this year.
Five winter colour tips from Dulux’s Colour Expert: Andrea Lucena-Orr
The right paint colour can transform even the dullest of rooms. We spoke to Dulux’s Colour Expert, Andrea Lucena-Orr, to hear her best tips for picking paint colours in winter. Here are her top tips:
- When tossing up between colours for your walls, always factor in existing fittings and decor that will stay in the room once the makeover is complete. This can include anything from flooring and cabinetry to windows and furniture. Existing fittings and decor may totally change what you can or can’t do with the space, so it’s always a good idea to factor them into your decision-making process.
- Lighting is another important factor to consider. Whether the room is lit by natural light or artificial light will impact upon the final appearance of the paint. South-facing rooms do well with warmer colours that help to create a sense of cosiness and comfort. North-facing rooms, on the other hand, work better with softer and cooler colours that help to create a sense of lightness.
- For those looking to integrate the Restore palette in their own homes, Lucena-Orr recommends starting with a lighter colour from the palette to provide a natural base, before adding deeper and richer colours such as earthy greens, red/browns and charcoal to bring depth and interest.
- Remember that paint is not just for the walls! You can also paint decor and accessories like ceramic sculptures, picture frames, and lamps, to brighten up a space without having to make a big commitment. This is a super subtle yet impactful way to breathe new life into a room, especially for those who aren’t quite ready to inject colour on a larger scale.
- It’s always a good idea to test colours before you commit to them. Leave your painted samples up for at least 2-3 days to ensure that you can see the colour under different lighting conditions and at different points of the day. Soothing, earth-based hues to make your home a refuge this winter
Andrea Lucena-Orr tells us that the Restore palette, which is made up of Dulux New Penny, Hog Bristle® Half, Black Caviar and Natural Flora (amongst others), are the perfect picks for a winter makeover.
“Dulux Natural Flora and Hog Bristle® Half have a warmth that will create a comforting and restful space, perfect for bedrooms. The deeper colours of Dulux Ferry, Finnegan and Oboe D’Amore are well suited as accents for communal areas, like the living room or entry, to help liven up these high-traffic spaces.”
“To add a scheme, the more muted, neutral colours of Dulux Rice Crop, Stowe White, Opononi Double, Tranquil Retreat and Winter Terrace will be incredibly popular across all interiors this season as they sit back and shouldn’t create a sense of feeling overwhelmed,” Lucena-Orr says.
These colours are great picks because they can blend in well to a variety of spaces and also look amazing under different lighting conditions.
Winter colour palettes in action
To showcase how colours from the Restore palette can totally transform an indoor environment, Dulux’s Colour Forecaster and stylist, Bree Leech, undertook a multi-room makeover in a renovated 1980s brick home.
“We chose to make over three rooms–a toddler’s bedroom and two entry areas,” Leech says. “The toddler’s room was completely transformed after New Penny or Natural Flora was applied as the feature colour, paired with Hog Bristle® Half. The combination of these colours helped to bring brightness into the space while keeping it soft and cosy”.
“Both accent colours add interest and make the bedroom more inspiring for a young child but are also colours that they can keep as they grow,” Leech says. “To add even more texture and warmth to our toddler’s space, we featured pale timber, woven cane and natural fabrics such as linen, cotton and wool; we also amped up the texture by adding a thick pile rug to the already carpeted floor.”
With the two entries, the intention was to make both spaces feel more inviting, sophisticated and memorable for the homeowners as well as for guests. “The entries have gorgeous, exposed beams and curved arched doorways; we wanted to celebrate both architectural features and did so through colour and décor,” Leech says.
“Using the gorgeous Dulux Ferry on the ceiling in the main entry and Finnegan as an accent in the secondary, we paired each with striking art and handmade ceramics to give both rooms more character.”
According to Lucena-Orr, due to the naturality of these hues, there will be many colours that
both first-time decorators and long-time colour lovers can feel comfortable with. “My advice is to just have a go! Not much can go wrong using this gorgeous, soothing and relaxed
palette. Whether you’re transforming a bedroom, living space or hallway/entry, it’s amazing how a change in colour gives you a whole new perspective on the space,” Lucena-Orr adds.
